Glasgow Kelvin College students from HN Health & Fitness and Easterhouse’s Level 5 Professional Cookery pooled their talents last week to deliver a suite of taster sessions for Glasgow EastEnd Carers at Academy House in Shettleston.
The students collaborated to organise the entire event, dealing directly with EastEndCarers, putting together promotional and information materials and setting up the equipment ready for the stream of intrigued and appreciative clients who arrived on the day. Sessions included Healthy Eating and Cooking, Sleep Hygiene, Fitness Testing, Exercise Classes and Foam Rolling.
The carers were out in force on the day and, having been tested and put through their paces in the exercise sessions, tucked into a healthy curry and salad lunch.
Jenny Fischer from HN Health & Fitness co-ordinated the event and there was a four-strong marketing team to help promote it on social media. Students from both classes worked extremely well together to deliver a memorable experience to around 40 carers, who all agreed that the event was enjoyable, helpful and an experience they would like to repeat!
The students also thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Jenny said;
“It was great to see all the carers coming in and enjoying themselves, and knowing that we were creating health and fitness options that they could be part of.”
Events such as these are great experience for the students, helping to hone their communication, citizenship, teamworking and organisational skills. It also helps them reflect on and evaluate their own performance and abilities and brings great benefits to our local communities and residents, especially important for this group as caring responsibilities often mean they are unable to access activities and opportunities.
A massive ‘well-done’ goes to the students and to the staff who supported them.
