Course Information
ACCESS TO HNC CHILDHOOD PRACTICE
This is a full-time course (3 ½ days per week), over one year and is part of the Scottish Wider Access programme.
It is aimed at people who will normally have life experience skills and are wishing to return to education with the primary objective of working in Early Learning and Childcare, who have few or no qualifications and who have been out of education for more than 5 years.
What you need to qualify for entry...
Whilst there are no formal qualifications required applicants must have good written and spoken communication skills.
Applicants must have been absent from formal education for a minimum of 5 years.
Applicants will be required to attend an interview and undertake a written exercise as part of the recruitment process.
You are required to hold certification at SCQF level 5 or above (or equivalent) including English or Communication
Please note: Successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check prior to commencing placement in an Early Learning and Childcare setting.

- Child Development
- Child Development: Theory
- Play in Early Education and Childcare
- Children’s Rights
- First Aid
- Behaviour
- Additional Support Needs
- HIV, Hepatitis B and C Infections
- Communications Higher, ICT and Numeracy.
Candidates will be assessed using essays, class-based exams and presentations.
Full Time (3 1/2 days per week)
1 Academic Year
August - June.
The breadth of course content together with the successful attainment of the SQA units will provide the opportunity for progression to HNC Childhood Practice (SCQF Level 7).
