Course overview

This new course combines the theoretical aspects of chemistry and chemical engineering, with the principles and practices relevant to the modern chemical and process industries.

The HNC Chemical Engineering  programme is a one-year programme covering 15 credits from the HNC Chemical process technology framework The programme is designed to give you a broad overview of the chemical engineering area and covers subjects such as Principles of Chemical Engineering, Process Chemistry, Laboratory Skills, Fundamental Chemistry, Physical/Organic/Inorganic Chemistry, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Engineering Mathematics, Project/Research work

This course will provide the fundamental skills and qualifications to progress to study HND Chemical Process Technology, Articulation onto a University Degree and Industry

The course is a full time, intensive, but highly rewarding. It is a challenging, yet supportive, environment in which to develop your scientific and engineering theory and understanding, along with the practical skills you need to support this theory. All classes will be done on campus.

We want you to be successful. Are you willing and able to commit to the course without reservations? Read on if this is the case.

What you will learn

You will build up an excellent understanding of a broad range of theoretical aspects of chemistry and chemical engineering skills, including:

  • Chemical engineering: Principles
  • Fundamental Chemistry: Theory and Laboratory Skills
  • Organic Chemistry: Theory and Laboratory Skills
  • Heat Transfer Theory and Practical Skills
  • Fluid Mechanics: Theory and Laboratory Skill

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • One Higher at grade C or above, preferably Chemistry but consider a relevant science subject and four National 5 awards (or equivalent) which must include Maths and English
  • Successful completion of relevant access course or an appropriate group of National Qualification units

Applicants who do not meet these criteria, but have relevant experience or alternative qualifications, will be considered

Additional Requirements:

Entry to the course will be based upon a competitive review of the applications.

For this course, if English is not your first language

  • you need to have SQA ESOL Higher (or equivalent)
  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.

Career Opportunities

  • Analytical or Industrial Laboratory Technician
  • Process Engineer
