We are delighted to announce that The Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards (The SHABAs) for 2020 have announced their finalists and the College’s MADE Barbering Academy has been shortlisted in two categories!

Congratulations go to our student Jeffrey Batista who has made it into the finals of the highly acclaimed SHABA awards which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary.  Jeffrey will be competing for 'Best Apprentice Barber' against 4 other finalists within this category.

The Academy has also had success in reaching the finals for the Best Training School/Academy.  We are thrilled to have been shortlisted within this category and look forward to the finals competing against 7 other training establishments within the hair and beauty industry.

Due to the ongoing situation with Covid-19, the Gala Dinner has been cancelled but they are working on a Virtual Award Ceremony - details will be available shortly.  Watch this space!

Continued Success At Made Barbering Academy

13/10/2020 By Tracey Borland

student cutting hair on dummyMADE Barbering Academy re-opened at the end of July to the current cohort of promising Barbering students who have embraced the changes to their learning under COVID19.

The students have been split into two ‘bubble’ groups to create social distancing and safe capacity numbers attending each day and as with all professional barber shops, the necessary Personal Protective Equipment and Health and Safety measures are in place.

Under these measures , the students have been able to continue client bookings and further develop their barbering skills. Credit is due to the students for their hard work and the agility  they have shown as they have engaged with new ways of learning, including remote online delivery  one day per week via Microsoft Teams.

As they enter the final month of this cohort’s training, some of the students have shared fantastic news that they have already secured jobs in barber shops – an amazing achievement at any time, but particularly during the current pandemic.

Students are also now fully equipped to handle the challenges they will face as a result of Covid-19 in the working environment.

MADE Academy is a special partnership between Glasgow Kelvin College and key industry partner, Rebel Rebel, the pioneers of modern barbering. It is this collaboration between Glasgow Kelvin College’s further education expertise and Rebel Rebel’s fresh, creative approach to barbering that allows to offer fast-track training programmes, perfect for anyone hoping to make their mark in the world of barbering.

student cutting hairDemand for the MADE courses continues to grow, and Glasgow Kelvin College staff have worked hard to plan safety measures for upcoming courses. The next intake is 9th November and is already at full capacity, with bookings now being taken for the following course in March 2021.

Anyone looking to book an appointment for a haircut can call the Academy directly on 0141 429 4728. All haircuts are carried out by the students and overseen by the course tutor, with vital Health and Safety measures in place.

MADE Barbering Academy Turns 2

02/04/2020 By Tracey Borland

MADE 2nd Birthday logo

MADE, The Academy for Modern Barbering turns 2 in April.

The Academy, a commercial venture run by Glasgow Kelvin College in partnership with Rebel Rebel Barbers, has gone from strength to strength since its launch in April 2018, and has had nearly 50 students come through its doors – eager to embark on a new career and vocation.

We could not be prouder of each of our students, both past and present and what they have achieved at the Academy, and beyond, as they make the move into the barbering world.

Our Academy is what it is today, and we believe a lot of this is down to our students. Because of their hard work and dedication to their craft - we want to celebrate them as we turn 2.

To kick off our 2nd birthday month, we will be highlighting some of our past student’s success stories on our social media pages, with a focus on their transition from the Academy into industry. Each of our students has taken a huge leap to do this course and over 95% are now working as barbers or in salons, which is a true credit to them all.

We’ll also be celebrating all things ‘2’ as we highlight some great stories from past and present students, from the two brothers excelling in our current course, to the lovely news of graduate, Ross Cochran-Brash becoming a dad to twins recently.

The Academy’s success has not gone unnoticed as it is in the running for the ‘Best Training School’ at this years Scottish Hair and Beauty Awards. Voting will re-open at a later date, but keep a lookout on our social pages to see how you can place your vote and support our students!

Follow us on Instagram and Facebook - just search for ‘madebarberingacademy’ to keep up with our celebrations and for all things MADE.

We wish all our students, graduates and friends in the industry well during this difficult and unprecedented time and look forward to the day when we re-open the Academy doors.

Barbering Students MADE to be Winners!

20/02/2020 By Tracey Borland

Glasgow’s MADE Barbering Academy students are celebrating a collection of prestigious national awards.

The Academy is a joint venture between Glasgow Kelvin College and Rebel, Rebel barbers in Glasgow which delivers much-in-demand skills and work experience to aspiring barbers with an eye on this expanding profession.

National City & Guilds/MHFed Digital Barbering Competition took place in London recently and the College submitted the work of five of its promising students to the category ‘Trainee Barber of the Year 2020’.  Competition criteria was to create a gents’ cut and style with before and after pictures.

Putting their heart and soul into their creations, the trainees displayed their high-end skills and techniques, producing a look any barber would be justifiably proud of.  The models shone brightly as they were photographed during a professional shoot staged by Glasgow Kelvin College Photography students, who worked with the MADE Academy trainees to create some impressive shots.

And the hard work paid off with two fabulous students placed in the competition:

Scott Morrison (24) from Cardonald  -  Winner of the City & Guilds/Men’s Hairdressing Federation National Trainee Barber of the year 2020 – Scotland.

Ryan Cairns (26 ) from Coatbridge, was Highly Commended as Runner-up in the overall national British City & Guilds/Men’s Hairdressing Federation National Trainee Barber of the year 2020.

Both Scott and Ryan joined the MADE Academy in August 2019 after deciding to leave the jobs they were doing and embark on a new career.  It is safe to say they are 'cutting it' with absolute 'style' and their risk has genuinely paid off.

Head of Faculty of Health, Care and Learning Development at Glasgow Kelvin College, Tracy Leavy, said;

“We are over the moon.  We are so proud of Scott, who has recently opened his own Barber shop in Glasgow and Ryan, who is establishing himself at great pace as a 'head hunted' Barber in Coatbridge - sky's the limit for these two!!

This prestigious competition, where the standards have this year been exceptionally high, has not only given our students the chance to shine, but created a great opportunity for cross-college teams to work together towards a goal.  We, and the professionals at Rebel Rebel, are delighted at such recognition for what has turned out to be a hugely innovative and successful training programme in Barbering.”

The Academy would like to thank the other three competitors who did an amazing job displaying their talent and enthusiasm for entering.  The feedback from them is that they thoroughly enjoyed the experience - a huge MADE well done to them!
