The Glasgow Rocks Basketball Academy at Glasgow Kelvin College is full of success stories. Now in its second year, a couple of notable achievements deserve a mention.
18 year old Kieran Allan from Livingston came into the Academy this year from 6th form college to study City & Guilds Electrical Installation alongside the intensive training for the Rocks Academy.
At the recruitment process, Academy Director Gareth Murray, came along to the try-outs and was so impressed by Kieran’s performance that he has advanced him to the Rocks team as a Professional Development player.
A delighted Kieran gets to train and appear with the team at their home fixtures and, although still on the bench, is looking forward to his exciting debut appearance in the future. His first appearance was at the home opener in the Emirates Arena at a close game against Newcastle Eagles. Kieran said,
“It was amazing. A crazy experience and the atmosphere in the arena was electric – I loved it! I can’t wait to get out there for a game.”
The trailblazing Glasgow Rocks Academy allows promising players to study the subject of their choice within Glasgow Kelvin College and, built around their studies, they embark on an intensive developmental training regime with the Rocks. This model of learning and training ensures that they will have a vocational skills qualification and experience at their fingertips, as well as a high-quality grounding in the sport they are most passionate about – Basketball.
Fingers are crossed for Kieran and his future talents.
One of last year’s Rocks Academy students has also gained recognition by being nominated for an award in the Daily Record Scottish Sports Awards in December. Declan MacDougall came to the Rocks Academy through their Twilight Basketball programme and Scottish Sports Futures which helped turn his life around and he hasn’t looked back since.
