Reading Ahead 2018/19 – Well Done ESOL National 3!

02/05/2019 By Tracey Borland

Eastend Campus National 3 ESOL class celebrated in the Library on Tuesday after completing the Reading Agency - Reading Ahead Challenge.

Students read six books in English by borrowing a book each week to take home,  complete a diary book report and talk to each other in class about what they had read.

The challenge has helped with not only reading and writing skills but also communicating with staff and each other, and building confidence.

They celebrated in the Library where Margaret Cairns, Head of Library Services presented the students with certificates.

Some of the students writing and feedback is on display in Eastend Campus Library.

On Friday, the National 3 ESOL class in West Campus will also celebrate completing the challenge.

Well done everyone, a fantastic achievement!

“Reading Ahead supports young people and adults by changing their perception of reading, opening up opportunities and building their confidence.”

Thenue Housing Group Making Choices for Change

02/05/2019 By Tracey Borland

College partner, Thenue Housing, were delighted to celebrate the finale of another of the successful Lottery-funded ‘Choices for Change’ programmes, the third group to complete the course.

The College helps to deliver a range of employability and personal development programmes to residents from the East and North East of Glasgow, helping them to re-engage with learning and the labour market.  With twelve learners completing the programme this time around, staff from Thenue and Glasgow Kelvin were on hand were there to present certificates.  Several are moving onto further learning and into other activity groups in the community.

Congratulations go to the learners and thanks to the Community and Flexible Learning staff who have supported them in their success.

Board of Management Supporting Strategic Planning

02/05/2019 By Tracey Borland

Last week, Members of the College Board of Management came together at Springburn campus to consider the College's strategic priorities for the medium term.

The College is grateful that they took time out of their schedules to support the planning process and the output from the Board Development event will go forward to the College's own Strategic Planning Session which involves staff and student representatives as well as College managers.

Thanks go to our Board Members for supporting and contributing to this event.

Seonaid’s Talents Promote Community Health Benefits

Local student wins logo competition for North East Glasgow wellbeing initiative for new parents and carers.

Glasgow Kelvin College NC level 6 Art & Design student, Seonaid Walker from Barlanark, has used her creative talents to design the attractive logo and branding for Café Stork, a community-based space for parents and carers from pregnancy through to the first year post-birth.

The Café Stork initiative comes from the North East Glasgow Health Improvement Team who are part of the Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (GCHSCP) and is currently being delivered in three locations across the East and North East of Glasgow.  Each café has an inclusive ethos that is welcoming to all as its central aim is to increase social connections between parents and carers, providing a relaxed and de-stressed environment for its customers to meet up in a safe and supported place.

To highlight the programme, the Health Improvement Team worked closely with Glasgow Kelvin College to offer a competition to design a logo and brand for the project, with a £100 voucher as the coveted prize.  From the excellent response, and with the support of the café users, a shortlist of three submissions was drawn up and Seonaid’s entry emerged triumphant.

Asked about her motivation for the design, Seonaid said;

“I read the brief and, from the description of the project I focused on the chilled-out, informal environment of the café.  The design is stylised and easy to reproduce in black & white too.”

Susie Heywood from Glasgow City HSCP said;

“It was a decision we took with the parents and it was clear that Seonaid’s submission really fitted the brief.  The logo has given the Café a brand identity and we hope to share it with our other café projects.”

Seonaid was delighted to receive her prize at the College’s East End Campus.  She’s moving on next year to do Illustration at an advanced level.  Remarking on her college experience, she said;

“I’ve really enjoyed my course and my time at Kelvin.  The staff have been fabulous and that is what matters.  I’m delighted to have won the logo competition and hope to get down to Café Stork in Parkhead soon to see my design in situ.”
