Another week and another update on what has been happening at the college.

Read on to find out about awards won, visits from various companies, a departmental launch and a few upcoming events.

BESA, BISPA, Tata Steel

The College was delighted to host events for our partner, BESA, at the Springburn Campus this week.  The afternoon session, delivered by Dr Chris Owen of Tata Steel, covered the innovative use of Virtual Reality in pipework specification and installation.  Needless to say, he spoke to a packed lecture theatre and students were engaged right to the end.

The College's thanks go to Iain McCaskey and colleagues from BESA and to Dr Owen - we look forward to welcoming them back.

Hard Work in STEM Pays Off for College!

Glasgow Kelvin College is very pleased to learn that, together with its sister colleges, Glasgow Clyde and City of Glasgow, it has achieved the STEM Assured Standard and Award.

The Accreditation Panel of experts from industry and HE used the STEM Assured certification framework, examining the College’s strategic plans in relation to STEM provision, the way in which this linked disciplines, the partnerships, curriculum development, innovation and the delivery ensuring benefits for students, employers and the wider economy.

Principal Alan Sherry said:

“Achieving and maintaining the STEM Assured standard signals to our student and local communities the College’s determination to excel in STE< educatin and training. Our significant investment in STEM-related infrastructure and the extensive network of Learning Centres with digital access are creating real opportunities for progression and success for our learners. We continue to innovate and invest in STEM-related subjects across our spectrum of disciplines from health access to biosciences to engineering and IT. The STEM Assured achievement is a recognition of the collective efforts by our staff, students, partners and stakeholders.”

Kelvin Talent at British Education Awards 2019

Glasgow Kelvin College HNC Working With Communities student, Leah Cairns, was delighted to be a finalist at this year’s British Education Awards.

Leah’s remarkable learner journey, from a Youth Access member right up to her current HN programme and employment with FARE in Easterhouse, certainly impressed the BEA judges and, though she did not manage to win the Young Person of the Year category, she joined the select handful of students who received certificates on the night.

Leah is pictured here with her proud Mum, Tracey, displaying her certificate at the ceremony. Fiona Templeton, Senior CLD Worker with the College, joined them in Manchester for an exciting and rewarding evening.

Reaching so far in this prestigious national event is a fantastic achievement and everyone involved with Leah is extremely proud of her success so far. Congratulations go to Leah and all the staff who have supported her.

Added to this, Glasgow Kelvin is also extremely proud of Andrew Gray who was awarded the Scottish Degree Student of the Year by the British Education Awards at the same event.

https://www.gcu.ac.uk/newsroom/news/article/index.php?id=269246

Although Andrew achieved first-class honours at Glasgow Caledonian University, his journey back into education began with Glasgow Kelvin College on a Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP) Access to Mathematics back in 2014. Since then he has gone on to great achievements.

His success is a fine example of the impact of partnership working and of the College’s long and fruitful relationship with SWAP. Congratulations go to Andrew and warmest good wishes for his future.

Iain MacDonald – A Rising Star

Kelvin College’s own Iain MacDonald will be performing in the upcoming Glasgow International Comedy Festival this March!

Iain, a one-liner specialist and a finalist at last year’s prestigious UK Pun Championships, has been a regular on the Scottish comedy circuit for 10 years now as well as contributing to BBC’s ‘Breaking the News’ and formerly ‘Off The Ball’ radio programmes.

His Twitter @iainmacpun serves up a new joke every single day that keeps his followers more than amused!

He is putting on his own show, Mispunderstood, on Friday 15th and Thursday 21st March at 8pm in the Iron Horse pub on West Nile Street and Tuesday 26th March at 7:15 pm at Yesbar near Central Station.

Iain sold out at last year’s festival and is putting on 3 performances this time to make sure everyone has a chance to see his unique one liner show that has seen him featured on BBC Radio, STV and The Sun newspaper.

BBC’s Johnny Beattie has crowned him ‘Scotland’s Prince of Puns’ no less!

Tickets are still available via his comedian page on Facebook @iainmacpun, seetickets.com and the Glasgow Comedy Festival website and are only £5. Pay on the door will also be available but best get in quick before they sell out like last year!

Progression …And Excellence!

Former HND Mechanical Engineering student, Lewis Campbell, has been lauded for his excellence and innovation in the national Autocar-Courland Next Generation Award competition.

Completing his HND in June 2018, Lewis progressed to University of Glasgow and has stayed in touch with his Kelvin tutors to keep them informed of the prestigious award which recognises his work in developing an anti-cloning device for car engines.

Lewis generously cites his time at College as a key component of his success. He says,

“I’m really grateful for the experiences I have had at college, and during the judging process the judges were keen to hear about the practical manufacturing experiences I had at college, which the other finalists had not received at university.”

More information on his win is available on the AutoCar site

Our congratulations go to Lewis for his innovative talents and obviously to all the staff who have supported him in his successful learning journey!

The Fashion Collective Launch

The College is delighted to announce the launch of the exciting, new collaborative project, ‘The Fashion Collective’.

The project is the brainchild of the innovative staff and students in the Fashion Design and Manufacture department and brings together all the skills and expertise which relate to the fashion industry, building a cross-college approach to creativity, entrepreneurship and advances in the marketplace.

Alongside the Design and Manufacture course, students can now study for an HND in Fashion Business which teaches a variety of subject areas including buying, range planning, fashion forecasting and Journalism. A close relationship with Glasgow Caledonian University ensures that there is a linked progression path to their fashion business degree course.

There’s also the opportunity to gain transnational experience through Glasgow Kelvin’s international partnerships.

See The Fashion Collective webpage.

Electric Honey Sessions

Electric Honey are excited to showcase our latest signings in the intimate venue of The Hug and Pint in Glasgow's west end. The acts joining them will be:

  • Chris Greig & The Merchants
  • Flew The Arrow
  • Nicol & Elliott

Chris Greig & The Merchants are an Indie-Rock/Pop 4 piece based in Glasgow. Their energetic live shows are comfortably accompanied by the catchy hooks and powerful chorus' of their music. The band have supported the likes of brownbear, Indigo Velvet, Vistas, Nick J.D. Hodgson (former Kaiser Chiefs), and Ded Rabbit. After a very successful 2018, which included a sold out mini-tour of Scotland, and the release of their instant hit track 'Talking Aloud', the band look ahead to start an incredible 2019, with a huge show at the legendary King Tuts Wah Wah Hut supporting long time friends Indigo Velvet.

Flew The Arrow is a fast-rising contemporary folk artist from the small town of Ayr on the West Coast of Scotland. Since residing in Glasgow the last while and building his skills and reputation as a songwriter and acoustic guitarist, he is now part of the team at 23rd Precinct Music Publishing and has also signed to Electric Honey records, now working towards releasing new material over the coming months before a full EP release this spring time.

A musical collaboration of chance, Nicol & Elliott formed as a result of Andrew (Nicol - Guitar and vocals) asking Rachel (Elliott - Fiddle and vocals) to accompany him for a one-off show at Celtic Connection in January 2018. Known to each other through common connections within the Glasgow music scene, Nicol & Elliott began rehearsing with 2 months until the show. It soon became apparent that a songwriting collaboration was occurring, leading Andrew's more indie influenced songwriting towards more folky ground.

£6 in advance or £7 on the door:

Culinary Delights and New Experiences!

01/02/2019 By Tracey Borland

Yet again our students have had a busy week taking part in a variety of events and engaging in activities that broaden and enhance their learning.

From assisting and teaching each other to producing delicious meals and fantastic works of art, our students have shown they have a varied range of skills.

Read on to find out what they have been involved in over the past week.

Learn Something New Day

SFL learners joined the Jewellery HNC students for an hour and a half lesson. Jewellery learners worked one to one with eight SFL learners in metal texturing and metal stamping. The learners were able to design and create individual bespoke pieces. The purpose of the exercise is for the Health and Well Being Award- looking at ways to improve Mental Health.

The SFL learner measured their own moods before and after the activity. All SFL learners noticed an improvement in their moods. As an afterthought, it was decided to assess the Jewellery student’s mood- and interestingly they too all showed a significant rise in mood.

The “giving” of their time and skills was as effective for them as the “learning something new” was enjoyable for the SFL learners.

Guest Lecture From Scottish Canals Engineer

This week Year 1 HND Civil Engineering hosted a guest lecture from Peter Robinson, Head of Engineering for Scottish Canals.

He delivered a very informative and enjoyable lecture taking in his career as a Civil Engineer, the history of canals in Scotland, and gave us an insight into the some projects Scottish Canals are most associated with; the Falkirk Wheel, and The Caledonian Canal.

He also gave the students and staff a top secret preview of a future Glasgow tourist attraction! Sorry, we are sworn to secrecy... A big thank you to Peter for his time.

They are coming up with some group writing on this year's theme - Happiness and Laughter.

We also have a learner completing a short story to be included and another learner who will be performing his creative writing to an audience.

The festival takes place in March and all work will be displayed at the Glasgow Concert Hall. Very exciting!

Cycling Initiatives at GKC

Travel Champions – volunteering opportunities for students

Sustrans is a sustainable transport charity and they are running a volunteering program called Travel Champions, giving the opportunity to students to promote Active Travel within their institution.

Students who want to take part of this initiative are helping other students to choose walking and cycling for their everyday journeys and they also provide support to the delivery of events.

Although being a Travel Champion means offering a regular commitment, it particularly allows students to access FREE training sessions, improving their knowledge about bike maintenance, behaviour change or how to lead a ride, among many others.

GKC is now part of this initiative and to kick it off, we hosted an induction event on Thursday 24th January at the GK Velocity Cycle Hub. It was a very enjoyable moment and a good opportunity to share and discuss ideas. Students have been asked to think about the benefits and the obstacles of walking and cycling.

A huge thanks to Jamal and Mahmoud for their enthusiasm! They will work with the Campus Cycling Officer, Sandra from next month and will provide support to deliver the events coming at the College!

If you think this opportunity could be of interest to you, please get in touch with Sandra at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk

Quality Question Time for Care Students

Following on from a successful ETA last year where teaching staff and students from Faculty of Healthcare & Community Learning invited practitioners along for a question time session, the experience proved so worthwhile that it warranted a repeat performance.

At a lighthearted event with a serious mission, representatives from Glasgow Disability Alliance, North Lanarkshire Council Social Work, Stirling University, Includem, Lifestyle & Wellness and Crossreach were grilled by students, asking a wide variety of searching questions ranging from children's mental health and social media, through to the impact of Brexit on care services.

Students and staff got a lot out of the event which is an excellent and interactive way to engage students and provide real-life experiences of individuals involved in front-end care practice from the public and third sectors.

Our thanks go to our partners for supporting this exciting event and a big well done to the staff and students involved.  They're all looking forward to next year!
