Dr Bike Sessions at East-End, Springburn and West-End campuses

25/04/2019 By Tracey Borland

What a busy week, it was! More Dr Bike sessions took place at East-End, West-End and Springburn campuses last week, in collaboration with On Bikes, Lambhill stables and Bike for Good.

As usual, students, staff were given the opportunity to get a FREE maintenance check on their bikes by a skilled mechanic.

Those events have been successful and about 20 bikes have been checked. Sandra, our Campus Cycling Officer, was also able to engage with staff and students to promote cycling. We were glad to get the local community involved as well in Springburn.

Remember that if you have a bicycle or children’s bicycles, even unused for years, feel free to bring them at one of our next sessions!

Upcoming sessions:

  • Springburn campus – Monday 20th May, 11.30-1.30
  • Easterhouse campus: Wednesday 22nd May, 12-1 TBC
  • West-End campus - TBC

As usual, if you have any suggestions or comments, please be in touch with Sandra, our Campus Cycling Officer at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk

First Dr Bike Session at Easterhouse Campus

28/03/2019 By Tracey Borland

Our very first Dr Bike session at Easterhouse campus took place on Wednesday 20th March at lunch time, in collaboration with On Bikes.

This event provided students and staff with the opportunity to get a FREE maintenance check on their bikes by a skilled mechanic.

5 bikes have been checked and we engaged with about 10 people. It was a very positive event! Thank you everyone for taking part of it!

There will be many more sessions, including on the other GKC campuses. Stay tuned!

As usual, if you have any suggestions or comments, please be in touch with Sandra, our Campus Cycling Officer at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk

Go Green Week

15/02/2019 By Tracey Borland

The College celebrated taking part in this year’s Go Green Week by hosting events at the different campuses aimed at raising awareness on issues regarding Sustainability.

Wednesday 13th February

Home Energy Scotland and Alexandra Park Bike Hub showcased their projects at East-end campus. They provided students and staff with useful information on how they could save money on their home energy bills, free cycling services, trialling and hiring e-bikes, and free bike maintenance classes. A few members of staff and students even took up the chance to have a go on an e-bike -  an opportunity very much enjoyed by all!

On the same day, our first Dr Bike session took place at East-End campus, which was delivered by On Bikes - a Community Bike Project based in the North East of Glasgow.

And finally, at Springburn campus, students and staff from our Support for Learning department took part in the second of the ‘Giving an Hour for Springburn’ community litter picks. This event was organised in partnership with Community Safety Glasgow. It was great fun to have everyone back at the Velocity cycle hub for hot chocolate and some good chat too!

Thursday 14th February

A number of environmental organisations showcased their projects and current initiatives at Springburn campus. Amongst them, we had the pleasure to welcome Bike for Good, the North Glasgow Community Food initiative, the Scottish Fair Trade Forum, Home Energy Scotland and the 2050 Climate Change Group. It was great to hear lots of talk between the organisations and the students and staff - the smoothie bike was especially fruitful and caused a bit of a stir!

Friday 15th February

A screening of the film ‘Do the Math’ was hosted during lunch time at the Velocity Cycle Hub at Springburn campus. The film shown (‘Do the Math’) is a documentary focusing on the impact of the fossil fuel industry and the climate crisis.

A huge thank you to All who were able to attend! It was amazing to see and meet so many people. We hope you had good fun and have learned a bit more about Sustainability and what the College Sustainability team is working on.

If you would like to provide us with any feedback regarding Go Green Week, please be in touch with Anastasios Markopoulos at amarkopoulos@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk or Sandra Lavergne at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk
