Our students have been showing the community spirit this week, by working collaboratively to help decorate a care home and getting involved in helping to welcome new residents to Glasgow.
We also have news of a competition.
Read on to find out more.
Former Student Performance Success
She has filmed several shorts and won 2 'Best Actress' awards. One in Scotland and one in Spain. She then progressed on to feature films and filmed The Black Gloves and Matriarch. Matriarch came out in Cineworld last Friday.
Briony still talks of her lecturers at Kelvin College and holds them in the highest regard. She is really grateful to both Leah Woodhouse and Mairi Watt for all they did for her and for the training she received.
We wish Briony continuing success in the future.
On Wednesday the 7th of November the inter-departmental partnership, between the NPA Construction class and Employability & Citizenship class, worked together to paint the lounge at Ardencraig Care home.
The day was a huge success for everyone involved. The students all worked brilliantly together, mingling and supporting each other and sharing skills. It was a real team effort.
The Care Home staff and residents were delighted at the outcome as well.
Refuweegee – ‘Letters fae the Locals’
Our ESOL students have been supporting Refuweegee by getting involved with their ‘Letters fae the Locals’ and ‘Welcome Packs’ projects. Refuweegee is a local charity set up to help newcomers to Glasgow to feel welcome and find their feet.
The charity provides a Welcome Pack to each newcomer, which comes in a hand-decorated tote bag. The Welcome Pack contains essential items to help people settle in to their new home. One of the nicest components of the Welcome Pack are the Letters fae the Locals – handwritten cards with personal messages written from a local to a newcomer.
Many of our ESOL students can identify with being a new person in a new city and so they are well placed to offer some advice and words of encouragement. A brilliant way to reach out to and connect with the community as well as practice English!
If you are interested in getting involved with Refuweegee, you can contact them directly through their website contact or on Facebook, or get in touch with Claire Philip ESOL Lecturer on email@example.com.
