Successes Through The Lens

31/03/2020 By Tracey Borland

Sylvia Richardson amongst her photos

The Photography department at Glasgow Kelvin College are celebrating two major achievements during these complex times.

Past student Sylvia Richardson has just exhibited a series of images in her exhibition "Mackintosh" at Queens Cross Church in Maryhill.  The portfolio of interiors from The Glasgow School of Art came about directly from a project shot during her time at legacy North Glasgow College in 2011.  These beautiful images carry even more value not since the sad destruction of the building in the recent fire. The exhibition was visited by people from around the globe and generated several newspaper pieces as well as a television interview.

We’re delighted to help Sylvia celebrate her success!

And a great achievement by a current HND year 1 Photography student - Pawel Budzinski has made it as a featured entry in the LensCulture Street Awards 2020.  Pawel studied his NQ at our Easterhouse campus before embarking on the HND programme at Springburn.  The image of his daughter caught the judges attention and Pawel is delighted to have made such an impact so early in his career.

All staff in the Photography department are very proud of the achievements of these hard working students.

GKC Student Wins Technician of the Year Award

13/02/2020 By Tracey Borland

Thomas Newlands has won Johnson Controls Technician of the year, which is an excellent achievement for the 3rd year Refrigeration Apprentice.

Thomas has consistently proven his 100% commitment to become the best student and the best engineer he can be. Every task is planned and executed to ensure the highest levels of excellence is achieved regardless of the complexity of the activity.

Thomas is always on hand to assist other students who might be struggling both in the class and within the workshop environment.

Thomas is a very pleasant individual with a real talent to lead from the front and to motivate others to perform at their best.

Chilling Success For Refrigeration Students!

09/12/2019 By Tracey Borland

Declan Wallace – won the Institute of Refrigeration Scotland Apprentice of the Year Award

Declan Wallace – won the Institute of Refrigeration Scotland Apprentice of the Year Award at the recent IOR dinner held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Glasgow.  Declan works for William Whitfield

Declan has been a credit to not only himself, but to his company in the way he applies himself at College. Practically and theoretically his abilities have been of the highest standards. He has a great eye for detail, a willingness to learn & take on board all things new.

We have challenged Declan and taken him out of his comfort zone on occasion and he continues to go above and beyond the expected standards set by the College.

Declan’s nomination was a unanimous decision from the lecturing staff, who all praised his attitude and motivation to give 100% commitment to the course.

Scott Findlay – was runner up to Declan at the Awards

Scott has consistently proven his 100% commitment to become the best student and the best engineer he can be. Every task is planned and executed to ensure the highest levels of excellence is achieved regardless of the complexity of the activity.

Scott is always on hand to assist other students who might be struggling both in the class and within the workshop environment.

Scott is also a very pleasant individual with a real talent to lead from the front and to motivate others to perform at their best.

Ross Brogan (City Refrigeration) – Won the BESA National Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Apprentice of the year

Ross continued to produce outstanding results and progress at his time at College, a real example of how hard work, self-motivation and a thirst for knowledge leads to success.

Ross attended Glasgow Kelvin College for 5 years in total obtaining the City and Guilds 7189 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (winning the class prize for that year), a SVQ Level III in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (winning both the 2nd and 3rd year class prize as well as the 3rd year BESA Award) and also obtained a NC in Building services.

Ross is a true example of what can be achieved when you have a clear focus and drive towards a goal.

The staff in the section are so pleased at Ross’s continued success.

Congratulations go to the apprentices and the staff who supported them from the entire College – a huge ‘Well Done’ to everyone involved in their achievements!

A Successful Result For Electric Honey

05/12/2019 By Tracey Borland

Electric Honey, the HND Music Business Management student run record label at GKC, are pleased to announce that last years  signed artists, Nicol and Elliott, have been snapped up by the award winning and highly prestigious record label Last Night From Glasgow.

As Electric Honey is a development label we take this as a job well done by the students at Electric Honey Records  and we wish Nicol and Elliott all the best for the future. Electric Honey has been  Instrumental in gaining radio exposure across the airwaves and raising the live profile of the act over the last eighteen months .

The students and musicians also enjoyed a collaborative launch at The Hug and Pint and Oran Mor  by working closely with the Screen Printing students from  elysee St Geraud of Aurillac, France on their recent Erasmus exchange programme.

Andrew from the band writes

"This opportunity is in no small part due to the hard work EH has put into our 2 singles to date and we can't say how grateful we are for the opportunity to work with you at the label. It's been a great experience and we wanted to pass on our thanks to you and the students for all you've done for us."

Releasing with LNFG has been agreed this morning so neither they nor we have announced it yet. There's still some planning to work out.

Thanks again, Ken and all at GKC. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to support the label down the line. We will be only too happy to help.

Cheers,

Andrew & Rachel"
