Ground-breaking Youth Access Programme Shortlisted for Award

The Glasgow Kelvin College partnerships which deliver the highly successful evening and weekend Youth Access programme and the daytime Transitions to Learning and Work programme supporting care leavers have been shortlisted for a national award at the YouthLink Youth Worker of the Year Awards 2017 in the Partnership category.

The Awards celebrate the outstanding commitment, service and impact that youth workers, managers and partners have on the lives of the young people of Scotland and recognise the various categories of youth workers and the various roles that they undertake throughout Scotland.

The Youth Access programme provides services for young people aged 12-17yrs in the community through after-school youth work based sessions which engage them in activities using digital technologies and group work approaches.

Young people are supported to gain certificated qualifications which accredit their activities and help them prepare for employment or progress them to further learning.

The Youth Access approach is also adopted in the College’s Transitions to Learning & Work programme which supports vulnerable and care-experienced young people who may have previously been unable to successfully sustain learning programmes  and helps them to gain access to further education and employment opportunities.

With around 30 partner organisations working together to provide a quality service at different locations, the Youth Access programme is accessed by over 1200 young people each year in some of Scotland’s most deprived communities.  Their experience helps them to develop practical as well as citizenship and communication skills to benefit them as they move forward in their lives.

The College is delighted that their youth work partnerships have received this recognition which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the staff involved across the partner organisations.  Only by bringing together the skills and experience of each partner can we provide the support and quality service which our young people deserve.

The winners will be announced at the ceremony in the Crowne Plaza Hotel on 16th March 2017.
