GKC fitness clubs are taking place at both the Springburn campus and Easterhouse campus for both staff and students.
Resistance training, strength training, weightlifting, muscle training, load training the list could go on, but these are all just names used to describe the same type of exercise training that uses weight as a resistance. It is a form of exercise designed to improve muscular strength and endurance. It involves working against some form of resistance, which could be weights, resistance bands, or even your own body weight.
As well as having lots of different names weight training has just as many benefits. It has been shown to improve muscular strength, build muscle size, increase bone and ligament density, improve balance, improve metabolism, reduce all cause mortality rate (in some cases up to 17%).
For many resistance training has never been thought of the best approach for fat loss with many choosing cardio type activities as their preferred method of burning fat. However, a new study published in the European Heart Journal has found that weight training is just as effective as cardiovascular exercise for reducing body fat.
This study, when stacked alongside the growing evidence of the benefits of strength training for longevity, incorporating resistance is probably the best path to take, regardless of your goals, if you aim to live a longer, healthier life.
If you are new to exercise or an experience gym goer and want to gain the benefits of lifting weights, then please come along to our lunch time gym classes. These are open to everyone both staff & students of all fitness levels.
