The NQ Administration & IT: Medical Administration (Level 5) at Glasgow Kelvin College is designed for anyone looking to start a career in administration or customer service, with an additional qualification in Medical Reception.

This course builds your practical IT, communication, and organisational skills, giving you the confidence to work in a variety of sectors — from healthcare and financial services to retail, HR, hospitality, and marketing. You’ll also develop the professional knowledge needed for receptionist, clerical, and call centre roles, while gaining a foundation to progress to higher-level study.

This course is perfect if you:

  • Are a school leaver or adult returner looking to develop administration and IT skills.
  • Want to specialise in medical reception and terminology.
  • Are aiming for entry-level jobs in offices, healthcare, or customer service.
  • Plan to progress to NQ Level 6 Business & Administration or related study.

What you will learn

The course delivers a broad spectrum of administrative and digital skills, along with a dedicated Medical Reception qualification.

  • Medical Reception NPA – covering medical terminology and reception skills for healthcare environments.
  • Practical IT Skills – learning Microsoft Office packages including Word, Spreadsheets, Database, and Presentation software.
  • Communication & Teamwork – developing collaboration, professionalism, and interpersonal skills valued by employers.
  • Administration – covering Administrative Practices, IT Solutions, and Communication in Administration.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to enter employment or progress to higher-level business and administration courses.

Entry requirements

This course is ideal for both school leavers and adult returners

✅ Three National 4 qualifications, including English at (or equivalent), OR

✅ An appropriate NQ/NC at Level 4 in a relevant Business, IT or Medical subject (including Communications at Level 4).

✅ Applicants without formal qualifications are encouraged to apply and will be assessed individually.

ℹ️ For this course, if English is not your first language

  • you need to have SQA ESOL National 5 (or equivalent, click here to see equivalent qualifications)
  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.
