Course overview
Gain a respected qualification while continuing to build your career in the Building Services Engineering sector.
The HNC Building Services Engineering (Day Release) course is a two-year, part-time programme designed for those already working in the industry or completing an apprenticeship. It provides the knowledge and technical understanding needed for a career in the design, installation, and management of building systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and energy management.
This qualification is widely recognised by employers and professional bodies within the Building Services Engineering sector and offers a route to technical, supervisory, or management roles. You’ll learn to apply engineering principles to real workplace scenarios, deepening your understanding of sustainability, efficiency, and modern energy systems.
The day-release format means you can continue working while studying — building your career and qualification at the same time.
This course is ideal if you:
- Are currently employed in Building Services, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Want to gain a formal qualification while continuing to work
- Enjoy problem-solving and applying practical knowledge to real engineering projects.
- Are aiming for a technical or managerial role in the industry.
What you will learn
You’ll study one day per week over two years, combining theory, design, and applied engineering. Each unit connects directly to workplace practice, helping you apply new learning immediately.
- Design Principles and Applications – learn how to design safe, efficient building systems that meet modern energy and environmental standards.
- Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) – understand the operation and control of systems that regulate temperature, air quality, and comfort.
- Thermofluids and Acoustics – explore how heat, air, and sound interact within building environments.
- Building Services Engineering Science – develop core engineering knowledge to support technical decision-making.
- Analytical Methods – apply mathematical and problem-solving skills to practical engineering scenarios.
- Piped Distribution Services and Energy Efficiency – learn how water, gas, and other services are safely distributed while improving system performance.
- HVAC Control and Maintenance – study how systems are managed, monitored, and maintained for efficiency and reliability.
- Health and Safety in the Building Services Industry – understand safe working practices, legislation, and risk management.
- Project Management and Quality Assurance – plan and deliver projects to professional standards.
- Final Project – integrate your learning into a real or simulated building services design brief.
