Lou Hickey Featured in the Press for Championing Music as a Career

07/01/2026

Glasgow Kelvin College lecturer Lou Hickey has been featured in two major Scottish newspapers, the Barrhead News and the Glasgow Times, for her powerful advocacy of music as a viable and valuable career pathway.

In the articles, Lou draws on her experience as a Glasgow-born singer and former touring artist, including performing alongside Jon Lawler of The Fratellis as part of Codeine Velvet Club, before moving into education. Now a lecturer at Glasgow Kelvin College, she challenges the misconception that music is a risky pursuit, arguing instead that it should be recognised as a skilled trade supported through structured training.

Reflecting on attitudes towards creative careers, Lou says:

“That really annoys me when people say, ‘Oh, but is that a proper job?’ Yes. It’s skilled. It’s essential.”

The coverage also highlights Glasgow Kelvin College’s long-standing reputation within Scotland’s music industry, including the global success of the College’s student-run record label Electric Honey, which recently celebrated 30 years of launching iconic acts and supporting emerging talent through hands-on, industry-focused learning.

Teaching, Lou explains, has become the most rewarding role of her career, allowing her to help students develop the skills, confidence and industry awareness needed to build sustainable careers in music.
