Introduction
This qualification aims at enhancing the specialist knowledge and skills you need, including appropriate legislative, inspection and testing requirements needed in the completion and issuing of certificates or reports ensuring understanding of the results and measurements. Candidates should have up to date knowledge in the current version of BS7671- The Requirements for Electrical Installations from the IET.
Ideally, this course is intended for experienced electricians who have never gained formal qualifications in inspection and testing or who may wish to update and reaffirm their skills though this is not an entry requirement.
This qualification is intended for practicing electricians, working within this field, who want to expand their skills and knowledge of Initial Verification and/or Periodic Inspection and continue their professional development.
It is expected that from the 15th of October 2026, Amendment 4 will be the recognised “Regulations” book for the exam
About this course
What you will Learn
The qualification prepares candidates for the initial verification and periodic inspection of electrical installation work. The qualification has been developed by City & Guilds and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
On successful completion of the course candidates will be able to:
- Understand requirements for inspection and testing
- Understand safety management procedures when undertaking inspection and testing
- Understand the requirements for the inspection of electrical installations
- Understand the requirements for testing electrical installations
- Perform inspection and testing of electrical installations
Assessment
Candidates will be expected to complete and pass 2 written papers at a given date 2 to 3 weeks after the course along with an online examination and a comprehensive practical assessment after the completion of the course to gain this qualification.
Remedial session dates will be provided for the written assessment on the date of assessment if required,(Usually 2 week s after the assessment date).
The online exam will be offered in the evening at 6pm, available on different dates and the practical assessment will be completed on a one to one session arranged with the tutor out-with the course.
Entry Requirements
Candidates would be expected to have at least a basic knowledge of electrical science and work within the electrical contracting industry with experience inspecting and testing.
Candidates are required to have an 18th Edition qualification (e.g. 2382-22 or 2382-26 or equivalent) and a current version of the book (BS 7671:2018+A4:2026). Candidates will need to provide evidence of this
Progression
Successful candidates could progress onto the City & Guilds 2396 Design, Erection & Verification of Electrical Installations.
Duration, Time and Location
- 7 Days – split 3.5 days and 3.5 days over 2 weeks
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday am
- 8:30 am – 4:15 pm and 8.30 am - 12.00 pm
- Course lectures at our Easterhouse Campus, written and practical exams will be held in our Easterhouse campus, online exams will be held in our Springburn campus.
