Glasgow Kelvin College was delighted recently to welcome Minister for HE and FE, Youth Employment and Training, Jamie Hepburn to its Springburn Campus.
Accompanied by Bob Doris MSP, Springburn and Royston, the Minister was introduced to the College’s STEM provision featuring the many sustainable and energy-efficient technologies and practices which Glasgow Kelvin has adopted.
More importantly, he made time to chat with the apprentices and schools senior phase students who are being trained in these technologies with an eye to future-proofing their skillsbase.
The College’s strong partnerships with local employers has been of huge benefit to students as their generous donation of new, energy efficient equipment has boosted students’ learning. This enables learners to get to grips with state-of-the-art kit such as District Heating Systems and hydronic systems which are key to energy efficiency and carbon reduction.
From there, the Minister was introduced to the Community Engagement and ESOL team. They delivered, with students from the ESOL group, community partners and Springburn Community & Youth Hub participants, a lively presentation on the College’s commitment to community engagement and capacity building for local residents and groups.
Derek Smeall, Principal and Ian Patrick, Chair of Glasgow Kelvin were thrilled that both the Minister and Bob Doris were able to make time in their busy schedules to visit the Springburn Campus and meet with students to hear, first hand, their experiences and ambitions.
