The NQ Electrical, Plumbing & HVAC (Pre-Employment/Apprenticeship Level 5) course is designed for learners who want to start a career in Electrical Installation, Plumbing, or Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

This unique programme combines practical skills, technical knowledge, and industry experience to prepare you for an apprenticeship or entry-level employment within the building services sector. You’ll also have the opportunity to sit the SNIPEF, SECTT or BSE Selection Test, helping you stand out when applying for a Modern Apprenticeship.

The course focuses on developing your understanding of key engineering principles, safe working practices, and professional standards, giving you the confidence to transition smoothly into the workplace.

This course is ideal if you:

  • Want to gain hands-on experience and technical understanding before starting an apprenticeship.

What you will learn

You’ll develop the fundamental knowledge and practical skills that employers look for in new apprentices across the building services disciplines.

  • Plumbing Fundamentals – pipework, fittings, and water system maintenance.
  • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) – air systems, temperature control, and environmental efficiency.
  • Engineering Drawing & Measurement – interpreting diagrams and technical specifications.
  • Workplace Behaviour & Employability Skills – teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.
  • ICT & Meta Skills – developing digital literacy and adaptability for modern workplaces.

Throughout the course, you’ll complete a mix of theoretical units, practical projects, and simulated apprenticeship-style activities, ensuring your transition into employment is seamless.

Entry requirements

Entry to this programme is based on:

✅ A successful result in the College Aptitude Test (held on campus).

✅ A reference demonstrating good attendance, timekeeping, and attitude to study.

✅ A strong work ethic and motivation to pursue a career in the building services trades.

ℹ️ All applicants must be 16 years or over by 30 September of the course year.

ℹ️ If you have already completed an NQ Construction Pre-Apprenticeship course, you are not eligible to apply.

ℹ️ For this course, if English is not your first language

  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment  here at the College.
