Our Business Development Director; Alastair McGhee, joined one of our Engineering Foundation Apprenticeship students on site at McTaggart Construction as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week!
Alastair has let us know about his experiences of the day.
As part of Apprenticeship Week, I had the pleasure of meeting 17 year old Sophia Findlay and seeing, at first hand, the work experience she is gaining as part of her Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. Working one day a week at McTaggart Construction’s Riverside Dalmarnock development, Sophia is involved in a range of civil engineering roles on this major development site. She has had the opportunity to get involved in a wide range of tasks involved in site preparation, laying out foundations, building construction as well as the business side of meeting sub contractors and customers.
Sophia’s Foundation Apprenticeship experience has already given her skills that are in high demand by employers in the construction industry. The beauty of the Foundation Apprenticeship programme is that it allows this experience to be developed whilst still at school and in parallel with other school based qualifications.
I was already convinced of the value of Foundation Apprenticeships but seeing Sophia actually engaged in work on a major construction site in Glasgow really brought home to me how important these frameworks are. These Foundation Apprenticeships, along with Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships now provide a complete vocational learning journey for people in Scotland and to develop skills that are directly relevant to employers. If I had my time at school again, this is an option I would definitely take.
