Go Green Week 2020 – The Update

27/02/2020 By Tracey Borland

The College took part in this year’s Go Green Week by hosting events aimed at raising awareness on issues regarding Sustainability.

Monday 24th February

A number of environmental organisations showcased their projects and current initiatives at Springburn campus. Amongst them, we had the pleasure to welcome Home Energy Scotland, On Bikes, Woodland Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Sustrans. It was great to hear lots of quality conversations between them and our students and staff.

The amazing mechanics from On Bikes provided a free Dr Bike session, fixing up bikes and carrying up minor maintenance repairs.

Students were also involved in the event by running a stall. The ESOL National 5 Stage 1 offered free vegan biscuits and asked students to complete questionnaires on going “green”. The questionnaire will also be available online and results published. This exercise is part of an initiative on the College being more environmentally friendly, in conjunction with Sandra Lavergne (Active Travel Officer), Olga Sanchez (Campus Cycling Officer) and Claire Walters with her class NQ Pathways to Employment.

Tuesday 25th February

On Tuesday, we had only one watchword: being active! Olga, our Campus Cycling Officer, took a small group for a nice and enjoyable ride up to Springburn park; whereas at the same time, Sandra, our Active Travel Officer, led a dynamic and entertaining walk around Springburn campus. After this physical effort, they were all rewarded with a delicious meat-free lunch, hosted in the warm and cosy Velocity Cycle Hub!

Well done again everyone!

If you are interested in joining our next social rides and/or health walks, please be in touch with Sandra at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk

Thursday 27th February

And finally, at Springburn campus, the ESOL National 2 Elementary students and their lecturer Conal Jardine took part in our community litter pick. This event was organised in partnership with Community Safety Glasgow. It was great fun to have everyone back at the Velocity Cycle Hub for hot drinks and some good chat too!

A huge thank you to all who were able to attend! It was amazing to see and meet so many people. We hope you had good fun and have learned a bit more about Sustainability during this week!

If you would like to provide us with any feedback regarding Go Green Week, please be in touch with Olga Sanchez at osanchez@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk or Sandra Lavergne at slavergne@newsite.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk
