Back in 2020, Glasgow Kelvin College was delighted to hear that The Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards (The SHABAs) for 2020 had announced their finalists and the College’s MADE: Barbering Academy had been shortlisted in two categories – Best Apprentice Barber and Best Training School.
The wait is finally over and these prestigious industry awards are set to happen on 28th November this year - a glittering ‘in-person’ event at the Glasgow Hilton Hotel.
Congratulations go to our former student Jeffrey Batista who has made it into the finals of the highly acclaimed SHABA awards which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Jeffrey will be competing for the 'Best Apprentice Barber' Award against four other finalists within the category.
28yr old Jeffrey’s journey back to learning has been an intriguing and bold one. As a Lance Corporal with the Royal Regiment of Scotland and following several tours of duty and eight years in the forces, he decided that he needed a new challenge which used his creativity, innovation and initiative and gave him the independence to pursue his own goals. A friend persuaded him to look into barbering and, successfully applying for and completing the course at the MADE Barbering Academy, he hasn’t looked back.
Jeffrey is now a Senior Barber with celebrated barbers Rebel, Rebel, a progression which is testament to his commitment, talent and creative skills. He’s loving working in the barbering industry and says:
“Barbering is an exciting and constantly evolving industry, creating and adapting new or retro trends in styling. This is a totally different path and I’m constantly learning – it’s a great channel for my creativity and business skills and I’m looking forward to taking this forward into the future and developing my career.”
The Academy has also had success in reaching the finals for the Best Training School/Academy. The College is thrilled that the Barbering Academy has been shortlisted within this category and looks forward to the finals competing against seven other training establishments within the hair and beauty industry.
All shortlisted candidates will receive coverage within either SalonNV or BarberNV, with their own featured article and photography. Not only does this underline their success but it will inspire the next generation of talent, help recruit new and innovative workers and excite the industry across the country and beyond.
It’s been a long wait – congratulations go to all of the very excellent finalists and fingers crossed for an excellent outcome for the MADE: Barbering Academy and for Jeffrey!
