Glasgow Kelvin College Shortlisted for Scottish Public Service Sustainability Award

04/11/2026

Glasgow Kelvin College has been shortlisted in the Sustainability category at the Scottish Public Service Awards 2026, recognising its work to embed Learning for Sustainability across teaching, learning and College life.

The shortlisted project, Embedding Learning for Sustainability in Further Education: From Curriculum to Culture, highlights the College’s approach to making sustainability an integral part of the curriculum, staff development and student experience.

During 2025–26, the College identified more than 100 examples of Learning for Sustainability across 15 curriculum departments, covering areas including environmental responsibility, net zero, social justice, equality and community wellbeing.

This work has helped bring together existing good practice and establish a more coordinated approach across the College.

Learning for Sustainability is now embedded in Curriculum Enhancement Planning, ensuring departments consider how sustainability is reflected in their teaching and where further opportunities can be developed. The approach reaches approximately 250 lecturers and more than 10,000 students.

Sustainability has also been incorporated into the College’s Teaching Development Programme, supporting lecturers to develop learning that reflects the changing needs of industry, communities and the environment.

Students are playing an important role in this work. The newly established Students for Sustainable Futures society has engaged more than 500 students through activities including Veganuary, Sustainable Fashion Week, biodiversity projects and Earth Day litter picks.

John Clarke, Assistant Principal for Performance, Planning and Student Experience, said:

“It is really important that learning and teaching stays relevant, continually adapts, and meets the needs of our learners and the workplace. Embedding Learning for Sustainability in the curriculum is vital not just for society, but also for the employability of our learners. It’s a core requirement across many industries now and we want our learners to have the skills, the knowledge, and the confidence to act sustainably both in their professional and personal lives.”

The shortlisting recognises the College’s progress in bringing sustainability into everyday learning and creating opportunities for staff and students to contribute to positive environmental and social change.

The Scottish Public Service Awards celebrate achievements and innovation across Scotland’s public services.
