Your chance to be part of the Glasgow Kelvin Basketball Academy – Kelvin College Rocks

Glasgow Kelvin Rocks Logo

Did you know that, as a full-time enrolled student you can have the opportunity to be part of the exciting and new Kelvin College Rocks basketball team?   So don’t hang around – places are filling up fast.  Apply for the course of your choice and make sure you can take advantage of this unique sporting opportunity!

Once you have applied for a course, been accepted and enrolled you then have the opportunity to compete in trials for the Glasgow Rocks Basketball Academy and be part of Kelvin College Rocks.

The innovative programme is aimed at keen young amateur players who want to pursue a basketball career while also studying for their qualifications.  The basketball element of the programme will be provided by the famous Glasgow Rocks and will run in parallel with your studies on a course at the College.

We are recruiting 20-25 students to the Academy each year, where each will have the opportunity to practice two evenings per week and play competitive games on top of their full-time programme of study.

Both male and female students are already taking part and thoroughly enjoying the experience.

Fully supervised strength and conditioning training sessions will take place in the fully-equipped gym and sports facilities at the College.  Links with Scotland’s only men’s professional basketball team will also inject a performance element to the College’s existing sports programmes.

Duncan Smillie, owner of Glasgow Rocks Basketball Team, said on the programme;

“The Glasgow Rocks Basketball Academy in partnership with Glasgow Kelvin College is an initiative we are delighted to have and it’s very exciting.  The Academy can make a genuine difference to the lives of the students.  Young people getting an education running parallel with a first-class basketball programme gives a potential pathway to pro-basketball in the UK, Europe and even the US college system.

The bar will be high for students, as it should be, but this opportunity could be life-changing for the young students involved.

I would like to thank Glasgow Kelvin College for their passion and support for young people in Glasgow – it is quite inspiring and we are proud to have them as a partner.  I am equally thrilled that we have Gareth Murray as Academy Director.  He has one of the finest basketball minds and his leadership of the Academy Coach and students assures a first-class programme will be delivered”

Glasgow Kelvin Principal, Derek Smeall, added;

“The College welcomes the opportunity to again work in partnership with Glasgow Rocks to establish the Basketball Academy in Glasgow.  Each student has already enrolled on the course of their choice and will continue to study while developing their basketball skills with one of the finest teams in the UK.

Having the Basketball Academy will also provide solid work experience opportunities for other students at the College.  Together we are confident that the Basketball Academy will provide both learning and sports opportunities in an innovative setting.

We are thrilled to expand further our partnership with Glasgow Rocks for the benefit of our students and look to the future of the Academy with real enthusiasm.”

When do I start my course?

Most students should be engaging with us sometime during week commencing 23rd August 2021.  We are asking the majority of students to Engage Online Only For Your First Class and your Lecturer will explain at that time how your course will operate.  Please do not come into our Campus buildings unless instructed to do so by your Lecturer or a member of College staff.

Most courses will take a ‘Blended Learning’ approach to teaching with a mix of on-campus, for practical workshops and classes, and online learning for the first few weeks of the year.  We hope to see a move towards an increased volume of face to face learning from November but this will be under review and you will be kept informed.  What to expect in College Session 2021/22 (glasgowkelvin.ac.uk)

Where can I get advice?

Advice on your course can be provided by your Lecturer.  However, the College has a range of support services to help you on your learning or personal journey – Advice & Guidance, Learner Support, Counselling & Wellbeing, Care Experienced.

Will my work placement still be going ahead?

The College is working closely with employers to ensure that work placements can go ahead, subject to the COVID guidelines in place at the placement.

More information will be available in the coming weeks through your Lecturer.

What COVID restrictions are in place in the campus buildings?

For those students who will be gradually coming into our buildings, we have protection measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for you.

In line with the Scottish Government guidance, we still have some common-sense requirements in place for people using our buildings to protect yourselves and others. Information on the restrictions and guidance is available here:  Covid Measures - What you need to do before you start College (glasgowkelvin.ac.uk)

What do I do if I feel unwell?

If you think you have COVID symptoms, do not come into College.  Inform your lecturer and book a test at your local centre.

If you feel unwell whilst in College buildings, you should return home.  Take a self test kit with you and test at home.  Under no circumstances should you self test in the College buildings.  If your test is positive, you should follow public health guidelines and self isolate.

Do I need to self test before coming to College?

Though not mandatory, The College recommends that you self test twice a week if you are coming on campus.

Free test kits are available from all campuses

Will all my learning be online?

Your tutor will explain the learning programme for your course at your first session which is likely to be online.

You may be aware that colleges are being asked, initially, to limit the numbers using their buildings at any one time and therefore only practical classes will be running at our campus buildings for the first part of the academic year.  This is to keep you and your fellow students safe as we ease out of the COVID19 restrictions.  Therefore, although there may be a classroom number and campus on your timetable for the first class of your course, we are asking the majority of students to Engage Online Only For Your First Class and your lecturer will explain at that time how your course will operate.

The College will be delivering a programme of ‘Blended Learning’ until October when we plan to move more courses back on campus, subject to Scottish Government guidelines in place at the time.

What’s expected from me when I login on Teams?

We have guidance, requirements and handy tips for students when they are engaging in online classes or sessions on Teams.  We ask that you read these to prepare yourself for your studies and follow the rules which are there for your protection.  This ensure everyone has a pleasant and productive experience online.

This is available at Online Etiquette: https://www.glasgowkelvin.ac.uk/what-to-expect/online-etiquette/

Can I bring my car to college?

Students are encouraged to use public transport or cycle where possible as this will reduce your carbon footprint and be in line with the College’s Sustainability agenda.

There is either no, or very limited, on-campus parking available for students (apart from disabled access spaces).  City Council parking restrictions apply in some campus neighbourhoods, including parking meters.

When parking or driving in the streets surrounding campus buildings, please remember that our College buildings are part of a larger community and we need to respect the homes, families and environment of our local residents and local businesses.

COVID 19 Guidance

For those students who will be gradually coming into our buildings, we have protection measures to ensure a safe and healthy environment for you.

In line with the Scottish Government guidance, we still have some common-sense requirements in place for people using our buildings to protect yourselves and others.  These are as follows:

  • Face coverings are mandatory for those who are able to wear them
  • Where possible, you should maintain physical distancing and avoid gathering together in crowds
  • Some corridors and stairwells may well be operating a one-way system so we would ask you to abide by the signage where possible.
  • We may have to limit numbers in lifts or in confined spaces at any one time.
  • Keep up with the hand washing and hygiene – we have enhanced cleaning in place and hand sanitiser is available for use on campus
  • We also recommend that those students coming on-campus routinely undertake Self-testing although this is not mandatory. We have Lateral Flow Device kits freely available.
  • If you feel unwell please don’t come into college but take or book a test.

Catering and Snacks

Our campus buildings are near or have access to catering facilities for lunches and snacks.  Where there is no canteen, we have vending machines which provide food and drink at a reasonable cost.

Part of our Community

Also, please remember that our college buildings are part of a larger community and we need to respect the homes, families and environment of our local residents.

We’re looking forward to welcoming you to a safe, healthy and stimulating learning journey as part of the Glasgow Kelvin Family!

Online Classroom Responsibilities

Although you might be engaging online in the comfort of your own home, please remember that the Student Code of Behaviour applies the same as if you were studying on-campus.  Below are some points you should bear in mind, for your own wellbeing and that of your fellow students and staff.

  • Ensure your learning environment is comfortable and free from distractions. Even though you are learning from home, you should consider it as though you are in a classroom.
  • To protect your privacy when turning your camera on, we recommend blurring your background or turning on a background theme – try to maintain good levels of lighting.
  • To minimise disturbances, inform other members of your household that you are learning. You could do this by closing the door of the room you are working in, or even placing a sign on the door.
  • Be prepared just as you would in college - have all the necessary equipment ready for learning, e.g. pen, notepad.
  • Dress appropriately as you would for college, e.g. don’t turn up in your pyjamas and make sure you are fully clothed.
  • When engaging on online learning, be respectful when the lecturer or other classmates are talking.
  • Unless you are using it to access your class, your mobile phone should be on silent and laid aside - do not private message other classmates during a lesson.
  • Act as you would in the college environment - inappropriate or offensive language or swear words are not acceptable.
  • Respect the privacy of others, do not screenshot, record, take or share photos during or after a lesson.

Guidelines for Online Etiquette

When you first engage with your class online through Microsoft Teams your lecturer will outline expectations with regard to your course. When learning online, please remember:

  • Treat everyone with respect when communicating. This includes emails, messaging, video calling on Microsoft Teams or when using social media
  • Use clear and appropriate language, no slang and abbreviations.
  • Do not share your own or other people’s private or confidential information.
  • Make sure you are engaging when learning - private chats with classmates should take place after
  • When using Chat on Teams, be aware of who is receiving your notifications.
  • Remember, normal College hours are between 8.30 and 5pm and staff may not be available outwith this time.
  • Do not share content that may be deemed inappropriate at any time.
  • Be patient and respectful when others are asking questions - some people may learn differently to you and need extra time and support.
  • If you are having difficulties understanding any course materials, please ask your lecturer

Top Tips:

Before attending an online lesson, you should:

  • Ensure your device is fully charged or have your charger to hand
  • Be on time, log in a few minutes before the lesson begins
  • If your video feed is not working or you don’t have access to a camera please inform your tutor
  • Dress appropriately for learning, as you would when attending College. For example, don’t wear pyjamas.
  • Be aware of your environment and any potential distractions e.g. pets, children, other members of your household

During an online lesson, you should:

  • Always blur your background to protect your privacy
  • Mute your microphone during lessons
  • Use the raise hand function to ask a question and remember to unmute when speaking
  • Be respectful to classmates and lecturers, don’t swear, shout and use inappropriate language
