New Digital Learning Centre in Glasgow Helps People Get Online

29/05/2015 By Tracey Borland

Opening of the ‘Click & Connect’ room at the Ashgill Recreation Centre (ARC) in Milton

A new community computer learning centre in Glasgow is helping people find work and boost career chances.

The ‘Click & Connect’ room at the Ashgill Recreation Centre (ARC) in Milton is the latest centre to open thanks to GHA, supported by Wheatley Group, Glasgow Kelvin College and Community Safety Glasgow.

Click & Connect provides free computer facilities and support classes in some of Scotland’s poorest communities. Expert advice is on hand to help people log-on to job sites, create a CV, get online shopping discounts, pay their rent and access online benefit forms and accounts.

Funding for the new computers came from GHA’s North West Area Committee and Community Safety Glasgow. The facility includes 14 computers and adjustable desks for wheelchairs users.

Glasgow Kelvin College and Wheatley Group will support the facility to help GHA tenants get online. GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said:

“We’re delighted to support this latest centre for GHA tenants and for people living in our communities.

It’s never been more important to get online and use the internet. The centres offer free help for people in our neighbourhoods to find work, go on to further education, access welfare benefit forms and save money on their bills.”

The Milton facility is the 27th Click & Connect centre launched and run by Glasgow Kelvin College and Wheatley Group. The partnership will support 30 new or upgraded centres to more than 8,500 people within Wheatley Group communities.

Glasgow Kelvin College’s Principal, Alan Sherry, added:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to build on our hugely successful partnership with Wheatley Group and GHA by expanding access to high-quality community-based learning and resources for the residents of Milton and North Glasgow.

The Click & Connect initiative and the ARC at Ashgill Community Centre will support local people by equipping them with relevant skills and encouraging them to engage fully with their communities, build capacity and create a learning culture for themselves and their families. Key to the success of this initiative is the spirit of partnership working for the benefit of our communities. Glasgow Kelvin College looks forward to the future and the continued development of the John Wheatley Learning Network.”

Phil Walker, Managing Director of Community Safety Glasgow, added:

“The Ashgill Recreation Centre is a busy, community facility located in the heart of Milton. Last year alone, 15,000 young people accessed our centre.

We are confident that the new Click & Connect Learning facility will be a well utilised addition to the centre.”
