The City & Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Barbering (SCQF Level 5) offers intensive, hands-on training that mirrors the pace and demands of a real barbershop environment. You’ll gain both the technical and professional skills needed to start a successful career in barbering, supported by experienced tutors and working barbers.

With MADE’s proven track record of producing job-ready graduates and MTA Education’s strong local connections, this course offers an industry-inspired learning experience that builds your confidence, precision and creativity.

Training takes place in professional settings where you’ll practise on models, develop customer-care skills, and learn how to promote your work through social media and self-branding.

This course is ideal for:

  • Learners who are self-driven, creative and willing to commit to home practice.
    us will provide a wide range of live cutting models but you will also need to create your own model resource.

You will be provided with an essentials barbering kit that suits this level of learning.

What you will learn

This fast-track training combines practical barbering experience with theory and professional development, including:

  • Working in the Industry – understanding the role of the modern barber.
  • Health & Safety – essential hygiene and workplace standards.
  • Tools, Products & Equipment – correct use, maintenance and kit management (kit provided).
  • Consultation Skills – assessing client needs and building rapport.
  • Shampooing & Conditioning – cleansing, scalp massage and product use.
  • Cutting Men’s Hair – clipper work, scissor cutting, fades and styling.
  • Facial Hair Design – shaping, trimming and beard styling.
  • Styling & Finishing Techniques – professional looks and product finishing.
  • Social Media & Branding – building your online barbering profile.
  • Employability Skills – professionalism, communication and client building.

✅ Self-motivation and commitment to independent study and practice

✅ A strong personal statement will support your application and help ensure the right course placement

ℹ️ Applicants must be 16 years or older at the start of the course

 

ℹ️ For this course, if English is not your first language

  • you need to have SQA ESOL National 5 (or equivalent, click here to see equivalent qualifications)
  • If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment here at the College.

Successful trainees will complete the course with a City & Guilds qualification and be invited to graduate with Glasgow Kelvin College.
