This Platform to Employment (Level 4) course is designed to help you develop the skills, experience, and independence needed to move confidently into work, volunteering, or further training.
You’ll take part in a wide range of practical, real-life activities — from gaining work placements to completing certificates and volunteering with community partners. Along the way, you’ll build teamwork skills, meet new people, and gain confidence in your abilities.
With small class sizes and supportive staff, you’ll be guided every step of the way as you prepare for your next stage in education or employment.
This course is ideal for learners who:
- Have a learning difficulty, disability and/or additional support need.
- Are working at National Level 3 or 4.
- Want to gain real work experience and practical qualifications.
- Enjoy hands-on learning, teamwork, and outdoor or community projects.
What you will learn
You’ll learn through a mix of classroom lessons, practical sessions, and work placements. Topics and experiences include:
- Independent Work Placement – a 10-week placement supported by our Employment Development Worker.
- Barista and Enterprise Skills – serving customers and building confidence through café projects.
- Manual Handling and First Aid Certificates – gaining recognised qualifications to support future work.
- Volunteering Projects – working with FareShare, The Conservation Volunteers, and Seven Lochs Wetlands.
- Employability and Group Work Skills – learning to communicate, work safely, and solve problems.
- Wellbeing Award – developing self-care and positive mental health.
- Independent Travel – practising how to travel safely to work and community activities.
- Educational Excursions – visiting workplaces and learning from professionals.
I prefer college to school, 4 years ago I couldn’t get from my home to college and now I have come a long way, Glasgow Kelvin College have helped me with my confidence and now I am doing a course which has put me on work placements and has prepared me for work I have worked alongside some great lecturers who have made me the person I am now. Entry requirements
✅ No formal qualifications are required.
✅ You should:
- Have a Have a learning difficulty, disability and/or additional support need.
- Be able to work at National Level 3 or 4.
College staff will meet with you to make sure this course fits your learning level and provides the support you need to succeed.
ℹ️ For this course, if English is not your first language
- you need to have SQA ESOL National 5 (or equivalent, click here to see equivalent qualifications)
- If you do not have a formal ESOL qualification but your language skills meet this level, you should apply for your course and then contact our Admissions team to organise an internal language assessment here at the College.
