Course overview

Gain confidence, build skills, and take your first steps into the world of work.

This exciting full-time course is designed for learners who are ready for a new challenge and want to explore real work experiences in a supportive college setting.

You’ll take part in hands-on projects, community volunteering, and work placements, all while developing the skills you need for future employment or further study.

Through small classes, you’ll work with staff who are focused on helping you succeed. You’ll also meet new people, build independence, and discover what kind of work you enjoy most.

This course is for learners who:

  • Have a learning difficulty, disability and/or additional support need.
  • Are working at National Level 3 (and may have some Level 4 ability).
  • Have completed a previous supported learning course such as Working Towards Independence.
  • Want to gain work experience and develop employability skills.
  • Enjoy practical, project-based learning and teamwork.

What you will learn

You’ll learn through real experiences in college and the community, including:

  • Work Placement – a 6-week independent placement supported by our Employment Development Worker.
  • Barista and Enterprise Skills – running small café projects open to the public.
  • Forest and Conservation Skills – working outdoors with tools and supporting local green projects.
  • Creative Technology – exploring 3D design and virtual reality.
  • Volunteering Projects – with organisations such as FareShare and The Conservation Volunteers.
  • Independent Travel Skills – learning to travel safely to work and community settings.
  • Educational Excursions – exploring workplaces and real environments.

You’ll gain confidence, teamwork experience, and new life skills — all while discovering your strengths and future goals

Entry requirements

✅ Have a learning difficulty, disability and/or additional support need.

✅ You should be able to work at National Level 3, with some Level 4 capability.

✅ You should have an interest in developing independence, teamwork, and employability skills.

College staff will talk with you before the course starts to make sure this is the right level of learning and support for you.
