About the Jewellery Department

Welcome to the Jewellery Department at Glasgow Kelvin College. Here, students can develop their skills in both traditional and modern jewellery-making techniques within a well-equipped workshop environment. The department offers courses at various levels, including NC Jewellery (Level 6), HND Jewellery, and a day release option for those looking to advance their skills further.

Courses cover a wide range of topics such as jewellery design, precious metal technology, gemstone identification and setting, enamelling, engraving, and the use of digital tools like CAD and 3D printing. Students have the opportunity to create original pieces, build a professional portfolio, and gain insight into both the creative and technical aspects of the jewellery industry.

The department maintains strong connections with the jewellery sector in Scotland and beyond, supporting students with guest speakers, workshop visits, and work placement opportunities. Graduates often progress to further study at art schools or universities, or move directly into employment or self-employment within the jewellery trade.

The Jewellery Department provides a practical and supportive setting for anyone interested in developing their craftsmanship and exploring career opportunities in this creative field.

Samuel: HND Jewellery

Hi, my name is Samuel, I am on the jewellery course at Glasgow Kelvin College and currently I'm just making some bracelets.

I'm going to make two bracelets, ten links on each. 

I was at school, I came to Glasgow Kelvin College, do the NC, I'm now doing the HND.

I basically always had a passion for making things and just decided one day that Jewelry would be a great fit for me.

Last year on the NC, we learned a lot about gemology. Super interesting stuff.

This year, we're doing lots of different techniques, a lot of design and I've also really enjoyed the engraving side.

David, our engraver master, he's just so brilliant. And I really hope to learn a lot more from him.

I think you could be a total beginner or have some experience and get along perfectly well and I think it caters to people of all abilities.

The lectures are just so lovely, kind, super helpful, encouraging and I totally recommend it.
