NQ Engineering with ESOL is an integrated programme for learners whose first language is not English and who want to progress towards a career in engineering.

This full-time course combines tailored ESOL learning with practical engineering training. It will help you develop the language skills, confidence and technical understanding needed for further study, an apprenticeship or an entry-level role within the engineering and manufacturing sectors.

You’ll develop your English through real engineering contexts, learning the technical vocabulary, safety terminology and communication skills used in engineering workplaces. At the same time, you’ll gain practical engineering knowledge aligned with SCQF Level 4 and 5 content, helping you understand core technical principles and workplace expectations.

By developing your language and practical skills together, the course provides clear progression routes into further engineering study, apprenticeships or employment.

This course is ideal if you:

  • Speak English as a second language and want to enter the engineering sector
  • Hold ESOL National 4, Intermediate B1 or an equivalent qualification
  • Are interested in an engineering apprenticeship or technical role
  • Want to build your confidence using English in a workplace setting
  • Are preparing to progress to further study in engineering

What you will learn

This course will help you develop your English and practical engineering skills together, giving you the confidence to take your next step into further study, an apprenticeship or employment.

  • Engineering-Specific English Language Skills - You’ll develop the English language skills needed in engineering environments. This includes learning technical vocabulary, understanding workplace instructions, using safety terminology correctly and communicating clearly with supervisors and colleagues. You’ll practise speaking, listening, reading and writing in real engineering contexts.
  • Applied Engineering Knowledge - Alongside your language development, you’ll gain practical engineering knowledge aligned with SCQF Levels 4 and 5. You’ll explore core technical concepts through practical activities and real-world examples, helping you understand how engineering principles are used in manufacturing and technical workplaces.
  • Workplace Communication and Technical Understanding - You’ll practise following technical drawings and instructions, asking questions, reporting issues clearly and working effectively as part of a team. This will build your confidence in taking part in further training, an apprenticeship or employment.
  • Health, Safety and Professional Standards - You’ll learn the language and expectations associated with safe working practices in engineering settings, helping you understand and follow workplace procedures confidently.
  • Employability and Progression Planning - You’ll explore engineering career pathways, including apprenticeships, further college study and entry-level technical roles. You’ll also learn more about Scotland’s engineering and manufacturing sectors and what employers expect.

Typical engineering units may include:

  • Design and Manufacture
  • Electrical and Electronics
  • Maintenance
  • Mechanical Fabrication
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

You will also study:

  • Communication at SCQF Level 4 – develop effective written and spoken communication skills for work and study
  • ESOL for Everyday Life at SCQF Level 5 – build your confidence communicating in everyday situations
  • ESOL in Context at SCQF Level 5 – develop practical English language skills for workplace and vocational settings

Learning includes class discussions, group projects and practical workshops, allowing you to build your engineering knowledge and English language skills together.
