Course overview

Your pathway back into education — and towards a rewarding career in nursing.

The Access to Nursing Degree (Care) is a full-time, one-year course (21 hours per week) that forms part of the Scottish Wider Access Programme (SWAP). It’s specifically designed for adults with valuable life experience who are ready to return to education and pursue a professional career in nursing.

If you’ve been out of formal education for at least five years and have few or no qualifications, this course provides the ideal route to university-level nursing programmes. It helps you rebuild academic confidence, develop core communication and study skills, and gain a deeper understanding of care practice and the healthcare environment.

You’ll study a wide range of subjects that reflect the realities of modern nursing — including human development, mental health, anatomy, stress management, and core healthcare values. The course also supports personal reflection and growth, helping you build the empathy, resilience, and professionalism required in nursing.

You can check your eligibility for SWAP by contacting SWAPWest directly.

This course is ideal for:

  • Adults returning to education after a break of five years or more.
  • Individuals who want to begin a career in adult, mental health, paediatric or learning disability nursing.
  • Those with life and work experience in caring roles, voluntary work, or family care who want to formalise their experience and progress to higher education.

What you will learn

You’ll study a rich combination of health, care, and communication subjects designed to prepare you for further study in nursing and healthcare.

Key units include:

  • Values and Principles in Care – explore the ethics and compassion at the heart of professional practice.
  • Social Influences – understand how society, culture, and environment impact health and wellbeing.
  • Human Development and Behaviour – study key life stages and the psychological factors affecting health.
  • The Human Body – build knowledge of anatomy and body systems relevant to nursing.
  • Mental Health and Mental Illness – learn about emotional wellbeing and the challenges faced by patients.
  • Stress and Stress Management – explore techniques for managing stress in yourself and others.
  • HIV Infection and First Aid – gain awareness and practical skills relevant to care settings.
  • Core Skills – achieve Communication at Higher level and Numeracy at Level 5.

Assessment combines essays, presentations and class-based exams and role plays, giving you a realistic experience of academic study before progressing to university or higher-level qualifications.
